La Asociación Española de Cirujanos se fundó en Madrid en 1935 aunque la primera reunión efectiva de sus miembros no se produjo hasta marzo de 1936. El inicio de la Guerra Civil (1936-1939) y las duras condiciones de la inmediata posguerra impidieron la cristalización de las iniciativas proyectadas por los fundadores. En 1949 se produjo una reactivación de la sociedad de tal modo que puede hablarse de una verdadera refundación. A partir de entonces sus actividades se han dirigido a la organización de congresos y reuniones y al mantenimiento de una revista propia. La Asociación agrupa a la mayor parte de los cirujanos españoles y a lo largo de su trayectoria se han reproducido en su seno las tensiones de la sociedad española y las crisis que la cirugía general y las nuevas especialidades han atravesado en nuestro país.

The Spanish Association of Surgeons was founded in Madrid in 1935, although the first effective meeting of its members did not take place until march 1936. The initiation of the Civil War (1936-1939) and the difficult conditions immediately following the same impeded the crystallization of the initiatives projected by the founders. In 1949, there was such a great reactivation of the society that it could be said that there was a refounding of the association. Thereafter the activity of the society has been directed at the organization of conferences and meetings and the maintenance of its own journal. The association is constituted by most of the Spanish surgeons and over the years the pressure of the Spanish society and the crisis which general surgery and the new specialities have undergone in our country have been felt.
